The new voices of Swedish Cinema!

FILM STOCKHOLM DEBUT is an initiative aimed towards debuting feature film directors in Stockholm. Film Stockholm Debut offers developing support, group and individual meetings, tailored workshops and exclusive meetings with people from the international industry as well as visibility at Stockholm International Film Festival in November.

Film Stockholm and Film på Gotland have collaborated for a long time on matters regarding film production and talent development. Since 2021 the collaboration is formalized and aims to strengthen the regional business regarding talent development, occupation and to enhance competence for companies, film workers and creators.

We want to continue to give the participants further possibilities for enhancement, this time in collaboration with Stockholm International Film Festival, who have welcomed the program Talang över Östersjön as a part of the Industry Days.

During this Works in Progress three filmmakers from Gotland and three from Film Stockholm Debut will present their projects in the making.

The collaboration between Stockholm International Film Festival, Film Stockholm and Film på Gotland aims to further strengthen the existing platform and promote young, Swedish film together. With a stronger collaboration we can create an even bigger network and give our Swedish filmmakers the opportunity to be seen both nationally and internationally.

»Skin to Skin«

Synopsis:
"Essie is a Swedish black woman in her mid 30’s, married to supporting and loving husband Jack. They have a daughter, Jona, who is four years old. Although Essie is happy with her husband and loves her daughter, something’s itching. She is on the brink of
a burnout, juggling between family life and working as a nurse. Essie and Jack go on vacation to the beautiful south of Sweden. Everyone including herself thinks this family vacation is exactly what she needs, but she finds it difficult to adjust to Jack’s upper
middle class friends.

When she meets the French visual artist Marion, the only other black person at the summer resort, Essie’s life is turned upside down. Marion is free, charming and straight forward, and opens Essie’s eyes to her own needs, wants and desires. Essie starts to wonder if those things can truly exist in a future life with Jack."

»My Best Friend's Baby«

Synopsis:
"Damir and Sara have found a home in each other, and in Stockholm’s queer community. Damir floats between nightclubs and still hasn’t come out to his family in Croatia. Sara, single and self-reliant, wants to have a child on her own. The two friends are convinced that a baby can’t change their special bond. Damir offers to donate his sperm, but won’t be involved as a dad.

When Damir has to visit Croatia for his cousin’s wedding, pregnant Sara comes along. As usual, if his family wants to assume they are a couple, that’s up to them. When arriving at the off-season Adriatic island, their straight act begins to live a life of its own. Damir’s boisterous and intrusive family soon figure out that Sara is pregnant. Now Damir and Sara must face the fact that the baby is real and on its way – and that everything is about to change."

»Kurt & Vanja«

Synopsis:
The romance has cooled off for Kurt and Vanja. They decide to drive around in a borrowed and dirty sports car through the corners of the art-world, to document the creations of famous and lesser-known artists. But the encounter with the art and artists
only creates more trouble for the couple, instead of a new spark. They meet Japanese artist and photographer Hal, and agree to be vacuum-packed and photographed as part of his artwork. This experience makes their relationship take a turn for the worse.

Set on Gotland in the 1920’s, and based on a true story, »Berta« follows a hot tempered farm girl on her journey to becoming Sweden’s first ever female bus driver.

Berta is the beautiful story of a marriage where both parties seem to have been born into the wrong social roles. It is also a fast-paced film about not holding back, even when others tell you to.
